Is Visegrád suitable for a day trip?
Visegrád is about 43 km from Budapest, so it can work as a day trip from Classic Hotel. The town’s main historic sights are the Royal Palace, Solomon Tower and the Citadel, set above the Danube Bend.
A useful way to shape the day is to begin with the Royal Palace and its Palace House area, then continue through the old town towards Solomon Tower.
The Citadel is higher above town, so check how you’ll reach it before setting out. The local tourism office also describes a one-day historical walk that connects the palace area, old town and Solomon Tower.
There’s a longer history behind the route. Visegrád became Charles Robert’s seat in 1323, and the Hungarian, Polish and Czech rulers held a famous meeting here in 1335. The first official document recording completion of the town’s double-castle system dates to 1256, during Béla IV’s reign.
How to travel from Budapest
A bus runs from Budapest Újpest-Városkapu, and a train-and-ferry connection is also available. For the latter, take the train from Budapest Nyugati station to Nagymaros-Visegrád, then cross by ferry to Visegrád.
Check the train and ferry connections together when planning, since the onward crossing is part of this route. The Budapest metro guide explains city connections that can help you reach Újpest-Városkapu or Nyugati.
A direct boat from Budapest is another option when it is operating. Services and fares can vary, so don’t build your day around a particular departure without confirming the current schedule.
If you plan to travel by boat, allow for the possibility that journey times may change with water levels and passenger traffic; MAHART also says seats are limited and bicycle transport is available.
For getting around after arrival, the local bus route to the upper sights can be useful when it is running. Service patterns can be seasonal, so confirm its current operation before relying on it to reach the Citadel or other hillside stops.

What to see in Visegrád
Start with the Royal Palace and Palace House area, then follow the historical walk through the old town towards Solomon Tower, also known as the Lower Castle. The Citadel, or Upper Castle, stands above the town and looks out across the Danube Bend.
The sites tell different parts of Visegrád’s story: the palace area connects to its role as a royal seat, while the Lower and Upper Castles form part of the double-castle system recorded in the medieval documents. If you want to visit all three, plan around the Royal Palace’s opening hours and check access to the other sites separately.
Planning time at the castle and town
The Royal Palace is open Tuesday through Sunday, 08:00–16:00, and closed on Mondays. Last entry and ticket sales are at 15:45, so make it your first stop if the palace is a priority.
Full-price admission is HUF 2,200 for ages 26–62. Discounted admission is HUF 1,100 for ages 6–26 and 62–70, and for up to two close relatives accompanying at least two people under 18. Children under 6 and visitors over 70 enter free.
Visitors with disabilities and one accompanying person per eligible visitor enter free. People under 26 and up to two close relatives accompanying minors under 18 also enter free on the third Saturday of each month.
Solomon Tower admission is HUF 1,100 for adults and HUF 550 for ages 6–26 and 62–70; children under 6 and visitors over 70 enter free.
If you’re driving, parking is free beside the museum, beside Palace House, on Fő utca and at the Solomon Tower parking area. Use the old town and palace area as the lower part of your visit, then plan the uphill sights around the transport or road access available on the day.
Seasonal access and the return journey
Access to the upper sights can depend on the season and the transport schedule. Panoráma Road is one-way for buses and motorcycles each year from 1 March through 31 October. Vehicles ascend from the summer approach between Visegrád and Dunabogdány and descend towards town.
The Visegrád–Nagymaros ferry departs throughout the day, with services from Visegrád beginning at 06:20 and the last departure at 19:45. The return direction from Nagymaros begins at 06:30, with the last departure at 20:00. Confirm the timetable and connections before setting out, especially if you’re using the ferry to reach your onward train.
Before you go: opening hours, fares, road access and transport schedules can change. Check the official site before you go, including the relevant transport operator’s information for your chosen route.
